Hedgehogs and marshmallows

Many moons ago, during our 30 Days Wild we started a hedgehog house.

It started life as a large wooden box

Than after weeks of doing nothing, we cut it up and refashioned it into a hedgehog house

Now we just need to locate it in a quiet part of the garden and hope for a hedgehog!!

At the moment the children are using the hedgehog house to sit on whilst there kettle boils, hot coffee and toasted marshmallows, yum yum (I'm just using the electric kettle and eating marshmallows in the kitchen, far more civilized)

Slow Sundays

I have been watching my Bird Box / Wasp Nest for a few weeks. Although we still have a few wasps in the garden, there didn't seem to be any visiting the nest.

So in an effort to reclaim the nest box for the birds, we decided to give it a clean out!!

After our morning of jobs we headed out for a ice cream!!

Our normal 'ice cream' shop had a huge queue so we went to Glasson Dock.

Its a while since we visited, but the house boat is still very much sunk!!!!

Ooh and I forgot the Plastic People. . . .

Day 30

Wow, 30 Days Wild, I cant believe its all come to an end.

Finishing off with some sunshine knitting.

I didn't complete a lot of the things I wanted. We didn't really get out and about, no trips to the river or the beach. We didn't have any suitable rain to dance in (my son really wanted to dance in the rain). I wish we'd done more family walks. . . . 

But I think its been a success, its made us spent more time outdoors (even though its been mainly at home)

(I'm not making excuses, but we started some big DIY this month which is still on going, its taken up lots of time and energy. More to follow)

Gold and Yellow

Day 29

This is a bit of a cheat, its not very wild!!

But we got a new fish for our little pond.

I think you can catch a glimpse of some yellow and gold. . . . .

The gold Goldfish is Pudge and

The yellow Goldfish is (ooh the fish off little mermaid, ooh what's it called?) Flounder.

Day 28

Today we started a project, but didn't get around to finishing it!!

Can you tell what its going to be?

Well done, you're correct, its going to be a hedgehog house!!!

 Hopefully I'll remember to take some more photos, we do have a bit of work to do. . . .

Day 27

Sometimes the simple things are the most fun

Day 26

We live on a very quiet close, no through traffic and pretty considerate neighbours.

But still I struggle to get the kids to play out (hence 30 days wild, to encourage my son)

Today we got out the pavement chalks. 

This activity some times spreads all the way down the road, but today we just had a small sample of street art.

Any time outside is better than nothing!

Black & Yellow

Day 25

What's black and yellow?

What did I spot in our garden?

A wasp?

No not A WASP!!!!!

A whole b****y nest full of wasps!!

I thought a bird was peeping out of the nest box near my green house, so off I went for a closer look!!

No not a pretty little bird, but a bunch of angry wasps!!

Not a very good wild day.

Running out of steam . . .

Day 24

Yes, we're definitely running out of steam.

On Day 24 we did a cloud watch.

As we did the daily school reading,

we kept peeping out of the back door for a cloud photo.

It was a glorious day.

Maybe it would be fun to do in a thunder storm.

But all we got was beautiful blue sky, may we have more of it. . . . . 

Sports day

Day 23

Today I have no photos (a sigh of relief for some people!!).

Today was school sports day. I spent the morning cheering on the races and my son spent the morning chatting with friends, ooh and doing the occasional race.

As I'd taken the day off work, I spent some of the afternoon cutting the grass!!

 Not very wild, but definitely out doors!

Day 22

Back to work and school today, I know it sounds like an excuse but its getting really difficult fitting everything in.

We only spent a bit of time outdoors today. I did a bit of garden tidying and my son did some bike riding. I didn't take any photos of the bike or the sorry looking garden BUT I did take a few photos of my beautiful Poppy.

I only have one at the moment but WOW its beautiful.

Revisit the sandwich tray with sand. . . .

Day 21

For day 21 of our 30 days wild we revisited our 'bird trap' (sandwich tray with sand!!)

We've had lots of visitors.

Occasionally we've added some water to start afresh. 

I have wished some of the smaller birds would stamp down a bit!!

The trusty blackbird is definitely the winner!!

Trail cam update.

Day 20

For day 20 we had a look through our trail cam photos.

I've picked out a few that we liked, but I'm not sure how easy they are to look at on the blog!

This one shows a blackbird mid take off.

This shows a collard dove mid landing, not the most graceful !

This one shows a mouse visiting over night. 

(If you think its a rat, please don't tell me, I don't want to know)

Day 19

Today was an easy 'wild thing' (if it really counts!)

The weather has been a bit chilly here in the UK.

I try and grow some veg every year, and normally I would have all my courgettes planted out by now. The first batch that went out have either grown very slowly or been completely eaten by slugs.

The last few plants have stayed in the green house.

So with the arrival of a big wooden box (my other half can get them from work) I just needed some extra compost.

So for my semi-wild thing, we planted out our courgettes in the green house. Its not much but it kept my little boy out side (even if he did spend some of his time messing with the trail cam)

Sandwich anyone?

Day 18

After yesterday, we needed to try harder.

So we headed to the shops to buy a sandwich tray. . . . . A bit weird, but stick with me!

Using sand from our old sandpit, we put a shallow layer in the bottom of the tray.

We spread it out thinly, then placed our bird food in the middle.

Hopefully when we have some visitors they will leave footprints.

If the sand doesn't work we might try compost with some water, yes a mud pie!
